The Super Eagles star scored his first goal since returning from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations but it was not enough as Atalanta lost to Bologna
Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman found the back of the net for the first time since his 2023 Africa Cup of Nations heroics with the Super Eagles, but his goal was not enough for Atalanta as they fell to Serie A’s surprise packages Bologna in a 2-1 home loss.
Lookman opened the scoring for the home side, but his first half goal was cancelled out by strikes from Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee and Lewis Ferguson.
How it happened
At the start, Atalanta's Charles De Ketelaere missed an early chance, sending a powerful shot over the bar from Matteo Ruggeri's cross, but the home still took the lead just before the half-hour mark when Davide Zappacosta's shot was saved by Lukasz Skorupski, only for Ademola Lookman to slot in the rebound, marking his first start of 2024 with his first goal of the year.
Bologna, trailing at halftime, underwent tactical changes with Alexis Saelemaekers and Jhon Lucumí coming on. The changes paid dividends for Bologna as Saelemaekers won a penalty shortly after the break, which was converted by Joshua Zirkzee to make it 1-1. Despite Atalanta's attempts to take the lead again, a combination of poor finishing and a resilient Bologna defense held them at bay.
Bologna eventually found the winner to stun the home side as Ferguson found the winner from range to take all three points away from the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo.
Thiago Motta's Bologna FC 1909 achieved a historic feat with their win over Atalanta, securing their sixth consecutive Serie A victory, a feat not seen since 1967. The 2-1 comeback triumph against Atalanta solidified Bologna's position in the top four, crucial for their aspirations in the league.
