Serie A clubs are in danger of missing out on UEFA competitions after a warning letter from European football's governing body
Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman and his Atalanta side’s place in the 2024/25 Champions League is under threat by European football governing UEFA and world football’s governing body FIFA.
Atalanta as well as other Italian sides have been told that they could be barred from partaking in UEFA and FIFA competitions due to undue government intervention in Italian football.
Italian football under threat from Mule Amendment
The cause of UEFA and FIFA’s threats to Italian football teams comes from a proposal to Italy’s governing body FIGC by Giorgio Mule, called the Mule Amendment, which will allow teams and players to seek redress from the TAR tribunal, skipping the current Sporting Justice System.
This move is supposed to be part of a larger proposal which would allow the Serie A to move away from under the umbrella of the Italian FA, which currently governs the league.
UEFA, FIFA threaten Italian teams
According to UEFA and FIFA, parts of the proposal currently go against their rules against government intervention and could result in teams from Serie A being banned as well as the 2032 FIFA European Championships hosting rights being taken away from Italy.
According to Sky Italia and La Republica, a letter from UEFA President Aleksandar Ceferin to Italys Minister for Sport Andrea Abodi threatened that, “If the text remains the same, we would have to exclude Italian teams from European Cup competition.”
Given the pushback from UEFA and FIFA, changes to the proposal are likely to avoid Italian teams being banned from continental competitions.
