Tom Tera's side secures promotion to NSL with a thrilling victory over Zoo.

Luanda Villa FC have gained promotion to the National Super League (NSL) after beating Zoo FC 1-0 on the final day of the 2022/2023 Division One Zone B clash played at Mumboha Grounds on Saturday afternoon.

The victory saw Villa finish on top of Zone B standings with 62 points, one point adrift second placed Zoo.

Derrick Otieno headed in the all-important goal in the 36th minute after finishing off a rebound when the Zoo goalkeeper spilled the ball from Vincent Mulama’s free-kick.

Villa began the match brightly and they should have grabbed an early goal following some good work by Jairus Nato five minutes into the game.

The midfielder combined well with Mohamed Barasa before he set up Phineas Omukatu, who was denied by the Zoo goalkeeper from close range.

Zoo grew in confidence as the match progressed and they came close to breaking the deadlock after the Villa defence was exposed in the 18th minute.

Brian Kiplagat connected with Kiprono's cross, but the midfielder's header hit the side netting with Villa goalkeeper Gerishom Aleba well beaten.

Villa then pressed and they were finally awarded a free-kick with ten minutes remaining to the interval when Otieno headed in the ball into the back of the net.

The two sides attacked each after the restart and they were able to create goal-scoring opportunities.

Gerishom Arabe was called into action in the 50th minute and he made a decent save to deny a Zoo striker from close range.

It was end-to-end stuff as Moses Masinde missed the target from close range in the 67th minute before Ggolola was denied by Arabe at the other end three minutes later.

Zoo came close to leveling matters in the 78th minute, but a long range shot from Ggolola was brilliantly saved by a diving Arabe.

Villa nearly extended their lead in the 82nd minute, but Moses Masinde curled his 22-yard delivery narrowly over the crossbar.

The match ended 1-0 in favor of Luanda Villa who have now earned promotion to the National Super League for the first time in the club’s history.
