With two wins in two games, the Umuahia club sit comfortably at the top of NPFL's Group B
Erasmus Onuh, the manager of NPFL Group B leaders Abia Warriors, has despite steering his side to outclass Bayelsa United, claimed that luck smiled on his team in their 3-1 victory on Sunday.
Abia Warriors took an early lead in their second match of the season with Kalu Nweke scoring for them with a simple tap-in in the second minute. The second half then saw them extend that through Bello Lukman before Henry Udezuka scored a final goal in the 87th minute after Ekeson Okorie had pulled one back for the visitors.
The fixture, played at the Umuahia Township Stadium, marked Abia Warriors' return to their home ground having played at temporary venues since March 2020 - a total of 1040 days.
It was also the 8th consecutive league victory at home and the second win in two league games, this season.
Abia Warriors are lucky - Onuh
Speaking after the game, Onuh whose side could have scored more against Bayelsa United, but were wasteful in front of goal, claimed that his team were only lucky.
"It was an interesting one, I'd say a pass mark because both sides played well but luck smiled on us," Onuh said in a post-match interview.
"Abia Warriors is a work in progress. The only thing I can assure you is that the team will continue to improve in every match. My only happiness is that the boys are cooperating. They are listening and taking instructions.
"We are lucky to run away with a 3-1 scoreline."
Warriors to play Lobi next
Ahead of their next league fixture against Lobi Stars, at the Umuahia Township Stadium, Onuh has stated that his side were not going to relax, adding that his team needed more adjustments.
"The team will keep on improving, and try to have a better result. We have seen some loopholes and some mistakes. We would try to correct them, just like what we saw against Rangers. We have made some adjustments. We would still do some adjustments.
"If you noticed, some final changes really changed the tide of the game, but we still have some job to do."
With six points from two games, Abia Warriors are currently first in Group B.
