Bright Osayi-Samuel, Mourinho and Fenerbahce shine
Edin Dzeko stole the show with a hattrick but the 26-year-old Super Eagles put up another solid display after his brilliant pre-season under the Portuguese.
For the 68 minutes he spent on the pitch in the UEFA Champions League, UCL qualifier against Swiss side Lugano, Osayi-Samuel proved decisive.
He completed the most dribbles, two, had the most tackles, three, and also won the most duels, nine (9) before he was substituted with 22 minutes left to play and Fenerbahce leading on the night.
Osayi-Samuel’s latest strong showing comes at the back of two solid preseason outings for the Turkish giants as he laid down an early marker for a starting berth under the enigmatic manager, Mourinho.
Dzeko steals show
Despite the strong showing from the Nigerian defender, the day belonged to former Premier League and Manchester City star, Edin Dzeko.
After a slow that from Fenerbahce in the away match after the hosts, Lugano, took a shock lead with a fantastic header, the Super Lig side found their back before the break thanks to a Dzeko penalty.
The 38-year-old went on to complete his hattrick to make it 3-2 after the hour mark before Osayi’s substitution.
However, despite Ferdi Kadioglu, the Manchester United-linked defender, making it 4-2 in the 74th minute, Lugano ensured that the second leg would be another explosive encounter in Turkey with a late goal to make it 4-3.
A strong start for the Super Eagles star and his teammates who will be looking to finish the job at home when they host the Swiss in the all-important second leg next Tuesday.
Osayi-Samuel on the move?
Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho and Fenerbahce do have a running battle on their hands to keep the talented Super Eagle, Osayi-Samuel.
An English Premier League side has made the first move, having launched an official bid for the Super Eagles star.
Bright Osayi has been linked with a move away from Turkish side Fenerbahce with top clubs in Europe wanting his signature.
The defender played a crucial role in the Yellow and Blacks' amazing journey in last season's title challenge.
His performance has led to newly promoted side Southampton launching a bid for the Super Eagles defender.
With his impressive displays early on under Mourinho, it is left to be seen if Fenerbahce will hold on to their prized asset who had also made his demands clear to stay to the club.
