The Argentina midfielder set up Darwin Nunez’s last-gasp winner at the City Ground to keep Jurgen Klopp’s men atop the Premier League table.

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister was in high spirits after Liverpool defeated Nottingham Forest 1-0 at the City Ground to keep the Reds top of the Premier League table for another weekend at least.

Nottingham Forest 0-1 Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp’s men looked set to drop two points in the title race against Nuno Espirito Santo’s troops, but Darwin Nunez’s late glancing header secured maximum points for the Merseyside club.

The Uruguayan was on the receiving end of Mac Allister’s cross for the winning goal in the ninth minute of second-half stoppage time, becoming the club’s latest match-winning goal scored by a Reds player on record in the Premier League and the 10th latest overall (98:38).

Mac Allister’s fourth league assist of the season set up Nunez’s 10th Premier League goal this term, seeing Liverpool pull four points clear of Manchester City and five ahead of Arsenal in the Premier League table before the pair’s fixtures against Manchester United and Sheffield United, respectively.

What did Mac Allister say after Liverpool’s win at the City Ground?

Speaking after the game, the 2022 World Cup-winning midfielder was pleased with the team’s second-half showing at a tough ground.

“To win it like that is not easy,” admitted Mac Allister. "We came to a tough place. I knew I had to put it in, and Darwin did the rest. In the first half, we needed to make runs in behind, and we didn't do it. Second half, we did it a little bit more. We know that there is no easy game in the Premier League. We are very happy.”

What comes next for Liverpool?

Mac Allister and his Liverpool teammates face the first leg of their Europa League last-16 at Sparta Prague on Thursday before a top-of-the-table clash with Pep Guardiola's Man City next weekend on March 10 at Anfield.
