In what could be a surprise move, the Chairman of Mamelodi Sundowns, Tlhopie Motsepe, also the son of CAF president Patrice Motsepe has enrolled for his SAFA D coaching course.
The 32-year-old is among the 37 coaches attending the D license provided by the South African Football Association (SAFA) and the regional section of SAFA.
This should not worry Sundowns coaches however, with Tlhopie enrolling for the coaching course not to become the club’s head coach, but for personal reasons especially with the club now setting up a vibrant youth system.
Teboho Mahoa, the Regional Executive Officer of SAFA Ekurhleni, told Idiski Times, a South African publication, that his brief chat with Tlhopie revealed he only wanted to understand the fundamental elements and dynamics as Sundowns have a youth development.
“I had a brief chat with Tlhopie, and he said he just wanted to understand the fundamental elements and dynamics as Sundowns have a youth development,” Mahoa explained.
“So, he just wants to understand the ins and outs of players, how to treat them, especially the small ones.”
“So Thlopie, wanting to enrich his knowledge a bit, will opt for a C and possibly a B license.”
Mamelodi Sundowns has grown into one of the most successful football brands not only in South Africa but across the continent as well, and part of their strengths has been having the best coaching set up.
Tlhopie was named Chairman of the DStv Premiership champions upon his father, Patrice, being elected as the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The D license usually takes around eight days to complete, but with the current course taking place over weekends, they will likely receive their entry-level permit at the end of this month.
