Mamelodi Sundowns have one foot in CAF Champions League semis after first leg quarters win against Esperance

Mamelodi Sundowns edged Esperance in a tightly contested CAF Champions League quarter-final first leg with dominant attacking and solid defense.

Mamelodi Sundowns have defeated Esperance 1-0 in the CAF Champions League quarter-final first leg played at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Tshwane on Tuesday afternoon.

Masandawana came into this clash with a bacd record against the Tunisian giants but that did not deter Miguel Cardoso's charges from turning the table.

The Portuguese manager placed big names in the lineup led by Khuliso Mudau, Lucas Ribeiro, Jayden Adams, and Peter Shalulile with Thapelo Morena replacing Tashreeq Matthews in a late inclusion.

Sundowns went into the attack from word go with Teboho Mokoena earning a free-kick inside the first fifteen minutes but Esperance goalkeeper Ben Said made a save.

A moment later,it was the Tunisians on the attack but their striker Geunichi sent a volley over the bar.

Sundowns continued to have the lion share of chances as Ribeiro had his shot outside the area going inches wide with Ronwen Williams well-beaten.

Cardoso had to make two substitutions at the restart bringing on Divine Lunga and Arthur Sales for Aubrey Modiba and Morena.

Six minutes later, the one-time African champions had their opening goal when Peter Shalulile tapped in the near post after connecting to a ball that was superbly delivered by Adams.

Esperance had a chance to grab an equalizer with Bouchniba delivering a perfect shot but Sundowns defenders failed the attack.

The Msandawana upped their energy as they pushed for the second but the Tunisians stood firm as they also attacked in the remaining quarter of the match.

Sundowns had another chance in the closing stages of the match just after the substitution of Bathusi Aubaas for Bafana Bafana international Adams.

The Blood and Gold were unable to draw level and saw Sundowns to a first-leg victory ahead of the return clash set for next Wednesday in Tunis.
