Manchester City are in talks with Julian Alvarez for a new contract with significant wage increase.
Manchester City have reportedly begun talks with Julian Alvarez for a new contract with a significant wage increase.
The 23-year-old joined City last summer after agreeing to join in January 2022, and although his involvement with the Mancunians has been limited, he shone for Argentina as they went on to win their third World Cup trophy, scoring four goals.
Alvarez set for a contract extension
Football Insider reports that Manchester City have opened contract extension talks with Julian Alvarez and are set to significantly increase his wages, which according to FBREF is currently £50,000.
City want to reward Alvarez's development and his new advanced profile with a salary increase that puts him among the top earners in the club.
Alvarez, who only joined last summer for a reported £14.1 million from River Plate, still has four years left in his initial contract, but City want to further intertwine his future with theirs with a contract extension.
Alvarez sharp rise
Alvarez attracted interest from all over Europe with his impressive performances for River Plate, scoring 18 goals in only 26 appearances for the Millonarios in the 2021/22 season.
However, since he joined Pep Guardiola's side, he has seen himself cast over by the towering shadow of Erling Haaland, whose numbers suggest he could relegate any other striker in the world to a mere deputy role.
Alvarez also went into the World Cup as a deputy for Lautaro Martinez, but he earned and claimed the starting position, scoring four goals over the course of the competition, a tally bettered only by Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.
Although Alvarez has only started six league games, he maintains his impressive scoring tally with five goals in the Premier League.
