A Casemiro header and an own-goal by Sven Botman helped Manchester United to a 2-0 victory over Newcastle in the EFL Cup final.

Manchester United defeated Newcastle 2-0 in the final of the EFL Cup in Wembley to lift their first trophy since 2017.

Casemiro opened the scoring with a fine header before an own-goal by Newcastle defender Sven Botman further compounded the magpies' woes.

How it happened

Newcastle came sprinting out of the blocks and the tricky Allan Saint-Maximin kept the United defence on their toes before testing  David De Gea with a fine effort.

Newcastle stayed on top of proceedings but just as they had done against Leicester last week, Erik ten Hag’s men rode the storm.

United applied the sucker punch just beyond the half-hour mark, as Luke Shaw’s free-kick was met by a brilliant glancing header from the effervescent Casemiro.

The celebrations from the United end were loud and palpable with a sixth League Cup trophy now within touching distance.

10 minutes later, United scored again. Wout Weghorst got the ball down with nice control and played a pass to Marcus Rashford, who saw his shot deflect off Sven Botman and over the stand-in goalkeeper Loris Karius.

Eddie Howe sent his Newcastle side back out after the break hoping for a response but there was none forthcoming.

The Red Devils were yet to concede a goal in this competition en route to the final, and the same solidity was on show here until the resounding final whistle,
