As expected there were a number of milestones that Manchester City and coach Pep Guardiola reached during the final to claim the treble, here are the best five
Manchester City completed the European treble for the first time in the club’s history, and the first time by an English club since Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United in 1999.
After such a groundbreaking feat, there were certainly going to be records and milestones that the Cityzens conquered in the final, and we have brought you the best five.
Guardiola becomes first manager to win trebles with different teams
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola completed a historic treble with the club, winning the UEFA Champions League title that had eluded him in his Manchester City reign and indeed since he led Barcelona to the title in 2011.
The Spaniard not only became the first manager in the Premier League to celebrate a treble, but he also became the first manager in the history of the UEFA Champions League to win a treble with two different clubs after doing so in his first season in management with Barcelona and also with Manchester City in 2023.
Rodri extends Spain’s lead in the finals top scorer chart
Goalscorer Rodri Hernandez entered the record books with his strike against Inter to claim the first UEFA Champions League title in Manchester City’s history by also becoming the 12th Spanish player to score in the competition's final.
Rodri found the back of the net with a precise finish with the inside of his laces from the edge of the box to give his side the lead in the 68th minute.
Spain now have five more UEFA Champions League goalscorers than any other country in the competition, pointing again to the country’s expertise in the European Cup.
Gundogan sets German record
Manchester City’s goal was technically assisted by captain Ilkay Gundogan as he continued his fine streak in the crucial month of May, which has seen him directly involved in more goals than all but two players in the European top five leagues.
However, Gundogan had already broken a record when he stepped on the pitch with the Manchester City armband, as he became the first German player in history to captain a non-German side at the UEFA Champions League final.
Alvarez becomes first Argentine to win major awards
Julian Alvarez, who was an unused substitute during the final still managed to get his hands on a slice of history, becoming the first Argentine player in history to win the Copa Libertadores, the World Cup, and the UEFA Champions League.
Before Alvarez’ victory with Manchester City, only three players had ever achieved the feat, all of them Brazilians, and all of them completing the treble with Inter’s neighbours, AC Milan.
In addition to becoming the first Argentine, Alvarez is also the youngest, at only 23 years old.
Manchester City reach record goal difference again
Manchester City’s win over Inter also saw them equal a club record after Rodri’s goal meant that the Cityzens would finish with an overall goal difference of +100 for the third time in Guardiola’s reign as manager.
After the 2018/19 and 2021/22 season, Manchester City scored 100 or more goals than their opponents during the campaign, and finally completed the treble to truly show their dominance.
Before Guardiola’s Manchester City side, no other team had reached the landmark even once.
