Harry Maguire was named Man of the Match and was moved to tears after the match against Sheffield United
England international Harry Maguire fought back tears as he received his award as the Man of the Match in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Sheffield United in the Premier League.
Maguire named Man of the Match
It was a truly emotional day for the former Manchester United skipper as he got to play against his boyhood club and rolled back the years to give a performance worthy of being named the best player on the pitch.
Maguire put several months of poor form and struggles behind him to help Manchester United to a hard-fought win over Sheffield United.
The Manchester United defender was emotional after receiving the MOTM award and also gave a moving tribute to Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton, who passed away mere hours before the match.
Charlton, who was part of the Manchester United side that won the European Cup in 1968 and also starred as England won their only World Cup so far in 1966 sadly passed away, aged 86 on Saturday, leaving many at the club in mourning.
Maguire speaks about Sir Bobby Charlton
Maguire spoke about his relationship with Charlton after the match against Sheffield United, saying, “First and foremost it is a really sad day. We obviously found out this afternoon and preparing for a game it hit us hard. Sir Bobby came into the dressing room a lot and he lit the place up. He is an absolute legend of the club.
“We are delighted to win the game but this is more than football and our thoughts are with his family.
“He’d always come in if we won or lost but his presence was really felt in the dressing room. You’d always see him around the club. We will miss him, the world will miss him.”
Maguire is expected to continue in the Manchester United squad after recent injuries to first choice centre-backs.
