Manchester United: Common sense club cancels end of season dinner after 14th PL defeat

Manchester United have had a poor season and currently sit eight on the Premier League table with two games to play.

Manchester United have taken the drastic step of cancelling their traditional end-of-season awards ceremony following a bitterly disappointing 2023/24 campaign at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils slipped to an eighth-placed Premier League finish and failed to win a single trophy under Erik ten Hag this term.

That has prompted the club's hierarchy to axe plans for their annual awards dinner, which was due to be held at the end of the season to recognise the team's top performers.

Instead, United will draw a veil over a forgettable year on the pitch in which they regressed alarmingly after last season's relative progress per a report from the Athletic.

Saturday's 1-0 home defeat to Premier League leaders Arsenal was the latest blow in what has been a wretched run of results since the turn of the year.

Ten Hag's expensively assembled side have picked up just one from their last eight matches across competitions and also slipped way off the pace for Champions League qualification.

United are already guaranteed to miss out on Champions League football again next season but still retain a slim chance of booking a spot in Europe having reached the FA Cup final.

That lack of silverware, coupled with United being set to finish as low as eighth in the final Premier League table, has seen the club take the unprecedented call to shelve their yearly awards bash.

It marks an undignified end to Ten Hag's second campaign at the helm after his promising debut season saw United lift the Carabao Cup and qualify for Champions League.

A over £390million outlay on new signings hasn't had the desired effect, with the Dutchman's future now shrouded in uncertainty ahead of a pivotal summer rebuild.

It seems even United's post-season traditions are being ripped up as they look to draw a line under 2023/24's crushing regression.

However, the former Bayern Munich manager believes that he will be the man on the hot seat as the Red Devils have ‘common sense’.
