The Manchester United star will be missing as the Red Devils take on Wilfred Ndidi's Leicester City side
English defender Luke Shaw’s injury troubles continue, keeping the Manchester United star sidelined for what could be an even longer stretch than previously expected.
After 254 days without playing for United, Shaw’s recovery from a calf strain is not progressing as expected, and although Shaw managed to represent England during the European Championship, his return to full fitness for club duties remains uncertain.
Shaw’s setback extends absence
The 29-year-old’s last appearance for the Red Devils was over eight months ago, and suffered an injury during pre-season training, resulting in another setback and delaying his return to the pitch.
Shaw initially injured his calf during his first week of pre-season, a frustrating twist after he had already missed the final three months of the previous season with a torn hamstring.
Ex-Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag had been open about the challenges in Shaw’s recovery, noting that the club could not risk another premature return.
In one of his last press conferences as Manchester United manager, Ten Hag said, "The process is not going as we expected [with Shaw].
"We know his past, we have to do this right, because we want him to be available and have a big impact on our performances," explaining the careful approach being taken to ensure Shaw’s long-term availability.
Shaw to miss start of van Nistelrooy’s reign
With Shaw unavailable and Ten Hag out of the spotlight for the upcoming Leicester fixture, former United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy will serve as the caretaker manager for the first time.
Manchester United’s injury list remains long, and it is unlikely that any players wil be making a surprise recovery for this week’s League Cup clash.
While Shaw’s return timeline remains unclear, the club’s cautious approach shows how critical he is to Manchester United’s defensive setup, as they are unwilling to rush him into the team until he can give them 100%.
For now, both player and club are focused on achieving a full recovery to avoid further setbacks, even if it means a longer wait for Shaw’s comeback.
