Manchester United will be without wunderkind Kobbie Mainoo for the first half of the season following an injury.
Manchester United fans have been left disappointed and gutted after the club issued an update on youngster Kobbie Mainoo.
Mainoo suffered a knock during the pre-season clash against Real Madrid in the United States on Thursday morning.
The 18-year-old left the stadium on crutches, with fans hoping he was taken off for precautionary reasons.
United give Mainoo update
However, the Red Devils have now released an update on the talented midfielder.
Kobbie was handed his fourth start in pre-season against Real Madrid but played just a few minutes before he was forced off after Brazilian forward Rodrygo landed on his leg following a tackle from United midfielder Casemiro.
According to a statement on their website, Mainoo is set to miss the first half of the new season due to that injury picked up against Los Blancos.
The club has now confirmed that Mainoo damaged his ankle and will return to the UK for further assessment.
“Manchester United can confirm that Kobbie Mainoo suffered an ankle injury during the match against Real Madrid on Tour 2023,” the Reds said in the statement.
“The midfielder is expected to be ruled out for the first part of the 2023/24 season.
He has flown home from Tour to the UK where further assessment of his injury will take place before a medical decision on the next steps.”
United fans react
Following the announcement by the club on Saturday morning, United fans have taken to their social media accounts to react.
Most of the reactions from the fans show they are gutted for the Academy graduate as they were looking forward to what is expected to be a breakout season for him.
Here are some of the reactions from the fans following the news on Mainoo.
Mainoo appreciates fans
Meanwhile, Mainoo has also taken to his social media to pen a message to the fans.
On his Instagram page, the British-born Ghanaian has promised to be back and thanked fans for their messages of support.
“I’ll be back stronger and in no time," he wrote on IG. "Thanks for your messages of support."
