Wayne Rooney has decided to leave his role as manager of DC United after failing to make the MLS playoffs

Ex-England international Wayne Rooney has announced that he will be leaving his role as manager of DC United after the club failed to qualify for the playoff round of the MLS.

Rooney quits DC United

Rooney, who played for DC United for two years after leaving his second spell with Everton, rejoined the club in July 2022 as a manager, hoping to take them to the playoffs, but has resigned after just over a year after failing to achieve that aim.

Rooney explained his decision to leave after DC United’s final match of the 2023 MLS season against New York City FC, saying, “It's the right time [to leave D.C. United]. I've done everything I can to get this club into the playoffs.

“It's not a single thing that's happened. It's about timing."

Rooney also opened up on his future plans after leaving DC United, noting that he decided to resign from his role at the MLS club without having any offers on the table.

The former Manchester United forward said, "What lies ahead, I don't know. I've seen a lot of reports in the media. I'm going back with nothing lined up.”

DC United, along with Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami were among the teams that did not make the MLS playoffs and will have to sit out a few months of action while other teams battle for the league title.
