Ten Hag chose the same starting eleven that was whipped in that second-half rout by Liverpool to right their wrongs.
Erik Ten hag was pleased with Manchester United’s response to the humiliating 7-0 defeat by Liverpool last Sunday to beat Real Betis 4-1 in the Europa League on Thursday Night.
Ten Hag chose the same starting eleven that was whipped in that second-half rout by Liverpool.
He described the Liverpool loss as a “huge setback” but said that “the players showed personality and character” on Thursday night.
Slow first half
United started well with Bruno Fernandes running down the right wing before setting up Marcus Rashford for the opening goal inside seven minutes but their sluggishness allowed Ayode Perez to pull the scores level after half an hour of play.
An improved second half saw Fernandes setting Anthony for a beautiful curling finish in the 52nd minute before the Portuguese arrow in Luke Shaw’s corner six minutes later for 3-1.
United was not done yet as Wout Weghorst stubbed in a rebounder to give the Ten Hag’s charges a decent result heading into the second leg.
“The players came together in the last couple of days after the huge defeat. We played [well] in the [first half] but made one mistake but the subs came on and had a huge impact on the game for the win,” the Dutchman explained the team’s performance in the second half.
United host Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday before heading to Spain for the second leg.
