Fans troll Harry Maguire, calls him ‘Scotland’s best striker’ after scoring an own goal
Fans have taken to social media to troll Harry Maguire as Scotland's best striker following his own goal at Hampden Park.
The Three Lions coach has faced heavy criticism for his insistence on Maguire, and the polemics intensified after the defender scored an own goal in England’s 3-1 victory over Scotland, which came after suspicious defending in the game prior that led to Ukraine’s equaliser in a 1-1 draw.
What Maguire said
In a conversation with the Express, as reported by Fabrizio Romano, the defender suggested that he understood the criticism, saying he is aware he has yet to start a league game this season but aspires to change his fortunes.
Maguire was close to swapping the Manchester-based club for West Ham in London during the transfer window, but the deal fell through. When asked about it, he revealed that an agreement could not be reached and that he and Manchester United were happy for him to continue at the club.
“I’ve not started a game in the first four games of the season; the story comes to me. I want to play football.”
“West Ham? We just didn’t come to an agreement. Man Utd were happy for me to stay, and I was happy to fight for my place.”
