The shot-stopper, now at Rayon Sport in Rwanda, picked up 13 clean sheets, seven Pilsner Man of the Match awards and two Player of the Month awards in a season that saw him crowned the season's goalkeeper.

Modern football today requires goalkeepers to get involved, so much so going by Simon Tamale's performance for Maroons FC last season.

The shot-stopper, now at Rayon Sport in Rwanda, picked up 13 clean sheets, seven Pilsner Man of the Match awards and two Player of the Month awards in a season that saw him crowned the season's goalkeeper.

That said, Maroons have the uphill task of replacing Simon Tamale, and Pulse Sports can confirm that the Luzira-based side is set to sign goalkeeper Derrick Emmanuel Were.

The 24-year-old top goalkeeper prospect spent last season at UPDF FC on loan from Soltilo Bright Stars, picking up a couple of man-of-the-match awards.

He has also previously claimed three Masaza Cup titles, two with Ssingo (2015,2018) and Buddu in 2016.

Derrick Were captained Uganda Christian University to the 2019 Pepsi University Football League title before joining Soltilo Bright Stars.

Having featured for the Maroons FC Junior team in 2014, the Luzira-based side will hope to play that card to win him over and replace Simon Tamale.

Emmanuel Akol is the only experienced goalkeeper at Maroons at the moment.

Amidst the Maroons discussions, Soltilo Bright Stars has also shown interest in re-signing Were; the Kavumba-based side needs another shot-stopper to compete with Hassan Matovu.

Holding onto Amaku

Having lost Simon Tamale after his contract run down, Maroons are holding onto dependable player Fred Amaku.

The 27-year-old forward, with a year left on his contract, was Maroons' top scorer with ten goals last season.

However, Pulse Sports understands URA FC has reached out to the player severally, although Amaku has declined to engage the tax collectors in respect for his parent club.

The StarTimes Uganda Premier League is expected to start on 15th September 2023.
