Mashemeji Derby postponed as FKF prioritizes crowd safety after chaotic scenes at recent high-profile matches overwhelm stadium security capacity.
Euphoria surrounding the much-hyped second leg of the FKF Premier League’s biggest rivalry match — Gor Mahia versus AFC Leopards — has been abruptly halted.
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) announced the postponement of the clash, originally set for this Sunday, citing mounting safety and crowd control concerns.
The match has been postponed following chaotic incidents at the recent first-leg encounter and Harambee Stars’ World Cup qualifier against Gabon. Both matches, held at Nyayo National Stadium saw thousands of fans throng into the facility stretched security efforts to the limit.

FKF President Hussein Mohamed said the federation was taking time to reassess and plan bette
“From the past two weekends, it is evident the fans are back and the love and passion for football has been seen. The issue of security, safety and proper planning has necessitated a change of plans which will last for about two to three weeks as we plan for the next derby,” FKF President Hussein Mohamed told Nation Sport.

'Come meet Benni McCarthy' – Taiwo Atieno urges Tottenham star to ditch England for Kenya
Taiwo Atieno has urged Tottenham Hotspur full-back Djed Spence to visit Kenya and meet Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy before deciding on his international future.
Mohamed's words follow troubling crowd control issues witnessed during the latest edition of the derby which ended in a goalless draw.
In the clash, the 22,000-seat limit was grossly exceeded forcing police to fire teargas canisters at the crowd that was outside the stadium, and during the Harambee Stars match, fans without tickets broke through a stadium gate.
“We needed a break so as to plan better. I don’t want a scenario where fans and families have come to attend matches but they end up in a cloud of tear gas or push and pull at the gate,” Mohamed added.
The FKF boss expressed concern that unless proper crowd control measures are implemented, the safety of supporters and families attending matches could not be guaranteed.
“Fans are back and we need better planning, more security officers and fans education for the next Mashemeji derby. We want to use the next derby to show that football can be played in a conducive environment irrespective of the fans turnout and correct what didn’t go well in the last two big matches,” he noted.

The abrupt postponement comes just as supporters of both clubs had begun ramping up preparations for the big clash.
The two teams had earlier agreed to stage the first and second leg matches close together once a suitable venue became available, following previous delays.
The original first leg, planned for November 23, 2023, was postponed due to renovations at both Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums.

5 Kenya-Eligible Footballers Who Played for Another Country
Over the years, many notable players have been eligible to play for Kenya's Harambee Stars and other nations as well, with some opting for the latter.
A second attempt in early March 2024 also fell through for similar reasons. This Sunday’s match, meant to be Gor’s home leg, has now been scratched off the weekend lineup.
“This is an idea which came up and we were convinced it would work because we needed the two matches to be held when Nyayo was available after earlier postponements. However, the federation has released fixtures which show we shall play with KCB at Machakos this weekend,” said Gor Mahia’s Head of Communications, Nick Okello.
“The reverse fixture is most likely to be played after three weeks or by the end of this month,” he confirmed.
Meanwhile, FKF has received a strong warning from 2024 Chan Local Organising Committee Chairman Nicholas Musonye, who said any further fan misconduct could see Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards banned from accessing both Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums in the future.
