FKFPL Mashemeji Derby: Predicting AFC Leopards XI for Gor Mahia duel

Hoping to end K’Ogalo’s dominance, Ingwe’s technical bench is expected to draft a strong starting line up.

Belgian tactician Patrick Aussems is set to lead AFC Leopards in yet another Mashemeji Derby on Sunday.

Although he has already stated that the remaining Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) matches are not his priority, given the gravity of the match, he might be forced to unleash his strongest XI.

Ingwe have struggled and have not managed to string back-to-back wins together in recent games, but the match at Nyayo Stadium gives them an opportunity to register a second straight win. They last beat the title-chasing Nzoia Sugar.

Aussems’ focus is now firmly fixed on the FKF Cup, as they have a chance to lift the domestic trophy. The 12-time Premier League winners are in the semi-final and will face Kakamega Homeboyz.

So, the Mashemeji Derby can be viewed as a mere inconvenience for the Leopards, but given the history and popularity of the match, the former AC Leopards' coach is expected to field his top guns.

In goal, Levis Opiyo is set to keep the gloves, while Robert Mudenyu and Kaycie Odhiambo are set to be deployed at the heart of the defence.

The experienced duo of Collins Shivachi and Washington Munene will maintain their places as the day's fullbacks against K’Ogalo.

Brian Wanyama has become a regular starter under Aussems, and the same is not expected to change on Sunday.

But the former Simba SC coach will have a slight headache over whether he should start Eugene Mukangula or Giovani Lukhumwa in the advanced midfield role.

Should he settle for Mukangula, then Aussems would hope the former Thika United midfielder will use his strength and experience to win the midfield battle.

Lukhumwa is young and energetic, and to contain Gor Mahia's electric midfield, the Ziwani-born star could be preferred because of his speed, agility, and creativity.

Jaffery Owiti, Victor Omune, and Peter Thiong’o are expected to be lined up as forwards, although the latter has always performed more defensive duties along the flanks in recent games.

Ojo Olaniyi has scored vital goals for Ingwe but will miss the match due to a suspension.

Predicted XI for AFC Leopards:

Levis Opiyo, Collins Shivachi, Kaycie Odhiambo, Robert Mudenyu, Washington Munene, Peter Thiong’o, Brian Wanyama, Musa Oudo, Giovanni Lukhumwa, Jaffery Owiti, Victor Omune.
