Matano blames FKF for hiring 'failure' coaches

Tusker FC coach Robert Matano criticizes the Football Kenya Federation for repeatedly appointing underperforming coaches to lead the Harambee Stars.

Fire spitting Tusker FC head coach Robert Matano has lambasted Football Kenya Federation for constantly filling Harambee Stars coaching ranks with underachieving tacticians.

The self-declared ‘lion of Kenyan football’ launched into a bare-knuckled thwacking of the federation following an insipid outing for the national team against Burundi and Ivory Coast in Lilongwe, Malawi.

Matano wants FKF to come clean on the criteria they employ in recruiting national team coaches. He singled out a number of tacticians, past and present, who have not achieved any meaningful results in their coaching careers.

“This is a self-inflicted injury on our national team by our very own federation. I don’t understand how they come up with the coaches that are given jobs with the national team. There is usually very qualified tacticians with pedigree looking for such opportunities but FKF end up hiring the worst.

"Take for example the current head coach. How did we end up with such a coach? Which meaningful team had he coached before taking over our national team? What results did he ever record even in the low-profile jobs he held before? And which other more qualified coaches expressed interest in the role?” Matano posed poignant questions regarding Engin Firat.

The Tusker FC tactician did not spare local tacticians coalescing around Firat, bashing the federation for equally yoking underachievers with Firat in the national team.

He singled out William Muluya and Ken Odhiambo as perennial failures who should never be near Harambee Stars.

“Look at Muluya. He has been Kariobangi Sharks coach for more than ten years. What has he done that warrants him being in the national team? What credible position or achievement has he got with Sharks despite enjoying such security of tenure?” Matano wondered.

He also took issue with ex Kenyan international Ken Odhiambo who has equally achieved nil in his coaching career.

“The other constant in the national team is Ken. What value is he adding that he has not added to the numerous clubs he has coached? I mean is he the best that the national team could get from the local pool? "
