Tusker were trailing 2-0 at halftime before a strong comeback in the second half.

Tusker FC head coach Robert Matano has warned underperforming players to pull their socks up or else they will be released.

Matano’s stance comes after the Brewers struggled against Rainbow FC in the Round of 16 of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Cup match on Saturday.

The Premier League's reigning champions went down 2-0 at halftime before they recovered and won by a margin of 3-2.

The former Ulinzi Stars head coach made changes to his starting XI and handed starting berths to fringe players.

"It was a small team, but you know this is a tournament. Every team is a big team in any tournament and in any game," the former AFC Leopards coach told the club’s website.

"We started with a slow pace, and I think it is because they are young players; they have energy, talent, and can run too.

They came well motivated for the game, and we started slow maybe because we underrated them as a small team, but all in all we saw some mistakes because we made them, and we rectified the mistakes and came back strong."

On the importance of upping their game, the tactician affirmed: "They are playing for Tusker, not any other team; they are not playing for Rainbow. Tusker are the champions, and they know that the logo is very important for the team.

"So if you cannot play and we see you do not deserve to be with Tusker, then you have no business being on the team."

Before mounting the comeback, Matano said he categorically told the players they must win the game.

"I told them that they only have to go and score those goals because, in the end, we only want to win," he added.

"The way they were going to score was their business. They started, and they were the ones who were going to finish."

He added that each player has a chance to play more games if they show commitment and a desire to improve.

"Most of them have not been playing, though, and I was giving them a chance because the league is so competitive. We have many matches, and everyone must get their chances," the Premier League winner concluded.

"Some played well, and some did not, but we will give them more chances. I am happy for them, but some are a little bit slow. With time, they will catch up."

In the quarter-final, Tusker will face top-tier rivals KCB.
