Samuel Koko believes Mathare United can survive relegation.

Mathare United interim coach Samuel Koko believes that his team must learn to capitalize on its chances in front of goal if they are to stand a chance of surviving relegation at the end of the season.

Speaking in the aftermath of the side’s 2-1 loss to Kariobangi Sharks in the Slum Derby, the coach who doubles up as a goalkeeper trainer said his side missed “three to four chances” that would have given them a different result.

Koko believes that if the side is to survive relegation, they must learn to be more clinical.

“We need to work harder in training to improve where we are weak, especially in front of goal. We need to sharpen our finishing line. If we can add more goals to our collection, we can win games,” he said.

“Every game has to be won. We are improving our defensive play. (Against Sharks) We were compact defensively and good in the midfield. We need to be better in the striking department. We missed three to four clear-cut chances. That needs to improve.”

Mathare had been relying on midfielder Daniel 'Van Persie' Otieno for goals which were vital in getting some shock results, such as the famous 1-0 win over K’Ogalo in February. However, he has failed to add to his six goals for the season.

The Slum Boys are expected to name a new technical bench in the forthcoming days. They are 16th in the league standings, amassing 22 points from 26 games.
