Mathare United extended their lead in the National Super League table to five points with a narrow victory over Kajiado FC.

Mathare United secured a late 2-1 victory over Kajiado FC in a National Super League match at Ildamat Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Slum Boys made it eight wins from 11 matches this term, thanks to Pascal Ogweno's winning goal with two minutes remaining to the end of the match, which took them five points clear of their nearest chasers, Mara Sugar FC.

The hosts should have claimed the lead in the third minute when a mistake in defence from United’s Fidel Otieno allowed Abubakar Okwi to run in on goal, goalkeeper Samuel Njung'e directed his compatriot’s shot away for a corner kick.

On 22 minutes the hosts threatened again, with James Mutuku teeing up Okwi to shoot from just inside the penalty, but the attacker pulled his effort narrowly wide of Njung'e’s right-hand post.

Kajiado had to pay for their early misses when United claimed the lead in the 20th minute. Steve Kimari marked his return to the starting team by scoring the opener after some excellent work from Mark Khadohi, who set him up for his first goal of the campaign.

Leonard Odipo’s men went to the tunnel enjoying the slender lead and it was Daniel Wamalwa who was called to action when he saved Timothy Otieno ’s attempt two minutes into the second half.

In the 50th minute, Christian Lubulu wasted a beautiful chance to double their lead in the box as he blasted his shot over Wamwalwa's  goals.

Five minutes later Elvis Shamala converted a great cross from James Mutitu down the left flank to make it 1-1.

Midway through the second half Alfani Barbosa went on an extraordinary solo run which started inside his own half and ended with him cutting onto his left foot inside the penalty area, but his shot was way high and wide.

Mathare then enjoyed a spell of pressure at the other end, though they lacked the necessary precision in attack to truly cut open Kajiado's defence, with Wamalwa not called into action nearly as much as in the opening quarter of the game.

The Slum Boys then stunned the crowd with a goal out of nowhere in the 89th minute when Pascal Ogweno blasted the ball home after getting on the end of a Tony Odhiambo delivery to make it 2-1.

The result saw Mathare United claim their eighth win of the season and maintain their place at the top of the standings, while Kajiado remained in the eighth spot.

In other matches, Luanda Villa managed to secure a point against the visiting Nairobi United in a 1-1 draw. Nairobi went ahead in the 26th minute, but Villa managed to restore parity in the 50th minute of the match played at Mumboha Grounds.

At Mumias Complex, Mulembe FC was beaten 2-1 by the visitors Mombasa Stars. Meanwhile, at Vapor Ground in Ngong, Vihiga Bullets were thrashed 3-1 by Kibera Black Stars.
