When Mauricio Pochettino brutally criticised former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama's alarming decline at Tottenham.
Victor Wanyama’s meteoric rise to English Premier League stardom was as swift as his unexpected decline.
Having made history as the first Kenyan to play in the EPL, Wanyama was once a midfield powerhouse for Southampton and later Tottenham Hotspur, where he played a crucial role in their 2019 UEFA Champions League final run.
However, his fall from grace at Spurs was both sudden and brutal, with former manager Mauricio Pochettino offering a blunt explanation for why the Kenyan midfield enforcer had faded from his plans.

Benni McCarthy lands in Nairobi ahead of Harambee Stars appointment
The South African football icon will be officially confirmed in his new role next week bringing excitement and anticipation among fans.
Wanyama arrived in England in 2013, signing for Southampton in a £12.5 million move from Celtic, where he had already announced himself on the big stage with a historic goal against Barcelona in the Champions League.
Under Pochettino at Southampton, he formed a dominant midfield partnership with Morgan Schneiderlin, and his performances earned him a move to Tottenham in 2016—reuniting with the Argentine tactician.
At Spurs, Wanyama’s impact was immediate. He formed a formidable trio with Mousa Dembélé and Eric Dier, helping the club mount a serious title challenge in the 2016/17 season, where they finished second behind Chelsea.

Victor Wanyama hints at where he wants to play next as he weighs several offers
Victor Wanyama has hinted at where he is likely to play next as he weighs his options from a number of several offers on his table.
However, his fortunes took a drastic turn in 2018, as persistent knee injuries started to plague him.
Though he played a key role in Spurs’ dramatic 2019 Champions League quarter-final triumph over Manchester City, his involvement dwindled in the later stages. By the time Spurs faced Liverpool in the final, Wanyama was largely a spectator.
Despite his contributions, Wanyama found himself frozen out of the squad in the 2019/20 season, sparking questions about his absence. In August 2019, Pochettino, known for his no-nonsense approach, delivered a harsh but honest assessment of Wanyama’s situation.
"It’s all about performance. Football is for today and tomorrow, not yesterday," Pochettino stated. "You always need to show that you are there and deserve to be there."
The Argentine tactician made it clear that Wanyama’s struggles were due to a combination of injuries and competition in the squad.

"In the case of Victor, he suffered an injury and another player stepped up and took his place. We are in a team, we are not a charity," Pochettino bluntly remarked.
"I am making it clear this is not about Victor, but we are not a charity – it is about performance. The coaching staff have a lot of different options to play different players.
“I am the coach, I need to take the decision and hope it will be right. Victor is a very important player but, for different circumstances, went backwards. That is the evolution of football, and things like that happen naturally at all clubs."
After Pochettino’s brutal assessment, Wanyama barely featured for Spurs. In January 2020, he left for Montreal Impact (now CF Montréal) in Major League Soccer (MLS), where he played until leaving at the end of the 2024 season, marking the end of his top-flight European career.
Though he became a key leader at Montreal, even captaining the side to a Canadian Championship win in 2021, his decline from a Premier League standout to MLS was steep.
The Kenyan international, once touted as one of the best African defensive midfielders, never quite regained the form that made him a household name in England.
Now he is a free agent assessing options over his next career move.
