The former national team captain joins the side on a one-year deal, as announced on Kampala Queen's official Twitter handle.

Retired Uganda Cranes midfielder Tonny Mawejje has landed his first coaching job at Women's Super League champions Kampala Queens.

The former national team captain joins the side on a one-year deal, as announced on Kampala Queen's official Twitter handle.

"We are pleased to announce Tonny Mawejje as our new assistant coach for the next year," read the tweet.

The side still needs to announce a new head coach after they parted ways with Hamza Lutalo last week.

The Kabojja-based side are looking to become the first Ugandan Women's football club to win the CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers.

Which in turn will earn them a ticket to the CAF Women's Champions League, becoming the second East African side after Tanzania's Simba to achieve the feat.

In 2022, She Corperate reached the Zonal qualifiers final but lost to Simba Queens 1-0; Lady Doves is the other Ugandan Women's club that has played at the qualifiers before.

Kampala Queens have already bolstered its squad following the acquisitions of Hadijah Nandago and Smalie Nakacwa, who both joined on loan from Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC.

The loan acquisition of Shakirah Nyinagahirwa, the MVP and top scorer of the Women's Super League last season, was also aimed at strengthening the squad.

FUFA in April this year confirmed that Uganda would host the qualifiers between June and August at a venue set to be confirmed.

Morocco's AS FAR Rabat are the competition's defending champions after they beat Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies FC 4-0 in the 2022 final.

Mawejje, a CAF C license holder, retired from football in 2022 after a 16-year stellar football career which saw him amass 83 national caps, scoring eight goals.

He also featured for Masaka LC, KCCA FC, URA and Police FC (twice), while outside Uganda, the midfield general played for Iceland's Vestmannaeyjar, Haugesund in Norway.

Throttur, KF Tirana in Albania and a short stint in South Africa and Kuwait with Golden Arrows and Al Arabi, respectively.
