Uganda Hippos coach Jackson ‘Mia Mia’ Mayanja has promised better performances as the team grows into 2023 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Hippos were off to a good start with a brilliant 2-1 win over Central African Republic on Monday evening.
CAR proved a tough nut to crack in the opening stanza but the Hippos returned more determined after the break.
Titus Sematimba brushed a corner kick for skipper Isma Mugulusi to flick in the opener two minutes into the second half.
John Paul Dembe doubled the lead in the 74th minute with the goal of the day after latching on to a long pass to twist and spin around his marker before curling the ball into the far post.
Mayanja was satisfied with the performance, especially the second half but promises better in the coming games.
“First games are always difficult but I think we shall improve as the tournament progresses,” Mayanja said after the win. He excused his players for some errors here and there that could’ve cost the team.
“It's a big stage for most of these young lads who are playing for the first time but again we’ve won against a good team that beat Cameroon to come through so it is good for us. Some players didn’t have a good game but we still have a lot to deliver,” he added.
Uganda Hippos will face fellow Group B leaders Congo on Thursday at 7 pm.
