Hippos' head coach Jackson Mayanja has always emphasised the philosophy of building from the back to enable his team to keep possession since his appointment in the role.
Mayanja has been at the helm for only a month, and a half, and the Hippos are beginning to adapt to his style ahead of the 2023 U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
The Hippos were involved in several build-up games locally and did well before flying to North Africa, where they drew 1-1 against the hosts in a friendly on Monday.
"It was a good test game against the hosts, and I am starting to see what I want from my players," Mayanja told FUFA Media in the game's aftermath.
"The goal we scored was well-built and fantastic. Seeing all those passes was exciting, and that is exactly how we are supposed to play."
"It was unfortunate that we conceded an own goal, but generally, it was a good game, and I believe we have sent the right signals to the opponents."
"Should we carry the same performance to the tournament, I am sure we are destined for the best," he added.
At the Military Academy Stadium in Cairo, KCCA FC's John Paul Ddembe scored for Uganda in the 42nd minute before Wakiso Giants FC's Apollo Kakogwe's own goal in the 45th minute.
The Hippos will relocate to Ismailia on Tuesday to continue their preparations. They will play a second friendly against Zambia U20 on Wednesday.
Congo, South Sudan, and Central African Republic (CAR) are Uganda's Group B mates, and all their games will be played in Ismailia.
The tournament gets underway on February 19th, but Uganda's first game will be played the next day against CAR.
