Nasreddine Nabbi has led Wananchi to back-to-back league titles as well as a historic continental final but appears to want out a year before his contract ends
Yanga coach Nasreddine Nabbi has hinted that his time with the Tanzanian giants might have come to an end following his team’s loss in the CAF Confederation Cup final to Algeria’s USM Alger on Saturday.
Nabbi watched his side win 1-0 away in Algiers to tie the two-legged final 2-2 but surrendered the title to USM Alger on the away goals rule after suffering a 2-1 home loss in Dar es Salaam last weekend.
Having seen his team retain the league title and reach a first continental cup final in their history, the Tunisian tactician feels he perhaps has taken the team as far as he can and maybe is the time to leave, unless the club shows a bigger ambition.
“In this moment I don’t know. It depends on the club’s strategy, what they want for the future of Yanga,” Nabbi told the media after Saturday night’s match.
“What’s the plan, what’s the team? I don’t want to coach only for money and fame for people to call me professor Nabi, no, I want to win. This is the responsibility for Wananchi, it is not possible to take the team and you have no capacity to coach and win.
“I love Tanzania, this is the reality. I am not saying this because I want to be popular with the people, no. Everybody knows I love Tanzania, I love Serengeti, Kilimanjaro, Mbeya, not just the tourist areas but all in Tanzania.
“To extend contract, maybe another coach is better than me in this moment for the future of Yanga. Maybe I cannot possibly give more now maybe in the future, but I don’t know.”
Nabbi joined Yanga in April 2021, taking over from Burundian Cedric Kaze who had been sacked a month earlier, and steered them to a treble in the 2021-22 season after which he signed a new two-year contract until the 2023-24 campaign.
He has led the club to another league title this season while making history with the team by reaching the Confederation Cup final but now appears like he wants out with a year still left on his contract.
The development will likely alert a number of teams on the continent who will be keen to snap up the former Al-Merrikh coach following his successful stint with the Tanzanian giants.
