PSG forward Kylian Mbappe has been named UNFP Player of the Year for the fourth time in a row, beating teammate Lionel Messi to the prestigious award
Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe made history at the UNFP awards after being named Ligue 1 Player of the Year for the fourth consecutive year.
Mbappe wins UNFP Ligue 1 Player of the Year
Mbappe has scored 28 goals in Ligue 1 this season, helping PSG to back-to-back league titles with a number of sensational appearances this season.
The Frenchman is almost certain to win the golden boot for the 2022/23 season, and his impressive performances have also led to him being named the best player in Ligue 1 this campaign.
Mbappe has now won the award every year since 2019, with the 2020 season, when the award ceremony did not take place, being the only season where the Frenchman did not win the title.
Messi beats Messi and David to award
The 24-year-old forward beat competition from teammate Lionel Messi, as well as surprise package Lens’ duo of Lois Openda and Seko Fofana, and Lille’s Canadian forward, Jonathan David.
Mbappe has contributed directly to 33 goals in the campaign this season, more than any other player in the league (Messi second with 32) as PSG claimed a record 11th Ligue 1 title, making them the most successful team in French top-flight history.
The France captain has one year left on his contract, with the option of a further year, and is considered central to PSG’s future project focusing on French youth but his future remains uncertain with the current turmoil surrounding Les Parisiens.
