Mbarara City had a season to forget last season. They were demoted from the Uganda Premier League for the first time since earning their promotion in 2016.
Despite that bad run, they were able to push in the Uganda Cup up to the semi-final stage. They lost a lot of players but coach Sadiq Ssempijja assembled a team that saw them end the first round of the FUFA Big League in the promotional slots.
The Ankole Lions are also firmly in contention for the Cup and will be hosting Eastern Region side Admin on Wednesday in Mbarara. Ordinarily, one would expect the team to shift focus on promotion but their Ssempijja says they’re going for both.
“We reached the semi-finals last year so, I don’t see why we should not focus on reaching the final or even winning it this time,” Ssempijja told Pulse Sports.
“We want to capitalise on the home advantage and the fact that they’ve travelled a long distance. We haven’t travelled long distances of late so my boys are very fresh for the game,” he adds.
Admin comes from the border town of Tororo.
