Gor Mahia were frustrated by Kenya Police on Sunday, forcing them to settle for a 0-0 draw which made them miss a glorious chance to get to the top of the table.

Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry is pleased with his side’s stellar clean sheets record after his side earned a fifth consecutive one in their 0-0 draw with Kenya Police FC at the Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.

McKinstry has further blamed injuries to some of his players as the reason the side lacked a final cutting edge to give them all the three points.

The Northern Irishman described the clash as “a very good game” of football, also explaining that the reason he had to set up the team quite differently was down to the fact that some of his players were unfit due to injuries.

“I thought overall, it was a very good game of football.  It finished 0-0. Both teams had times when they were on top of the game,” McKinstry said.

“I am not sure how many passes Police had in the first 10 minutes. We were knocking the ball around. I think you saw there was a change in formation.

“A little bit necessitated by the fact that we have got a lot of injuries at the moment. We have five or six guys who are not available or are not available for a full 90 so we have had to change things around.

“Young Brysone Wangai obviously came in, made his first start of the season and so, we were quite happy with how we moved the ball. Final 30 meters, we probably could have done a bit more.

“I thought Police set up in quite a low block in the first half and then in the second half when they brought Kinanga on to partner Tito, they went quite direct and we had to be careful with Apha and Juma in midfield to make sure we were picking those second balls.

McKinstry has hailed the fact that the game was an “interesting” tactical battle, expressing satisfaction at the fact his charges have achieved a fifth consecutive clean sheet.

It was a game of few clear-cut chances created by both sides and in the end, the draw was a very even and fair result, as it was one of those games that were in a state of damp squib for the majority of the time.

“I thought it was an interesting tactical game. I thought both teams played well in different parts and overall, it is a fifth clean sheet in a row for us which was our best run last season. Five clean sheets in a row was the best we did last season.

“We said that to the players, I want to get that record because if you do not concede goals, you are going to create a platform to win games.

“We are pleased with it. It was not a game of a lot of chances. Kevin Omondi made one good save towards the end of the first half, Matasi came really well to claim a low cross from Wangai to Benson that could have led to a goal, and so, not a lot of chances, but a lot of good football played.”
