Despite getting beaten in the quarterfinals of the MLS Cup to crown the champions of USA, Lionel Messi and Inter Miami will still represent the country in the FIFA Club World Cup

FIFA’s decision to grant Inter Miami a spot in the upcoming Club World Cup is raising eyebrows after the team’s surprising early exit from the MLS playoffs.

Despite a record-breaking season led by Lionel Messi, Inter Miami's playoff hopes were crushed in a 3-2 loss to Atlanta United. However, FIFA’s expanded 32-team tournament will still feature The Herons as one of the U.S.A representatives, thanks to a pre-existing invitation based on their regular-season performance.

Inter Miami’s controversial route to the Club World Cup

FIFA’s announcement last month awarded Inter Miami a “host club” slot in the Club World Cup due to their top finish in the MLS regular season, where they also secured the Supporters' Shield, with president Gianni Infantino, stating, “You have shown that in the United States, you are consistently the best club on the field of play.”

However, Inter Miami's playoff elimination has led critics to question the qualification criteria, which remain somewhat ambiguous.

FIFA’s decision to keep Inter Miami in the tournament, despite their playoff loss, is seen by many as a strategic move to ensure Messi’s participation because, as one of the world’s most renowned players, his presence bolsters the tournament’s appeal and could potentially aid in securing a TV rights deal.

Messi’s influence in securing Inter Miami’s place

Messi’s impact on the MLS has been substantial, drawing global attention to Inter Miami since joining last season. Despite injuries, his presence helped Inter Miami dominate the regular season, achieving a record points tally.

Even after their playoff loss, Inter Miami’s consistent regular-season success proved vital in securig them FIFA’s coveted Club World Cup spot.

In June, Inter Miami will kick off the Club World Cup on home soil, representing the MLS alongside 2022 CONCACAF Champions League winners Seattle Sounders with hopes of showcasing Messi on an international stage.
