Messi vs Ronaldo: In our generation he is the best — Mourinho weighs in on GOAT debate

Ex-Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho named 'GOAT' as the best player of his generation.

Newly appointed Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho inadvertently weighed in on the GOAT debate between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi when asked which player he regretted never signing.

Mourinho on best player he never coached

In a video for TNT Sports, Jose was asked a series of questions, one of which was to name the best player he regretted not signing, and almost immediately, the Portuguese tactician named Messi.

“Of course, I'd say the little guy [Messi], but the little guy was not coachable.”

Mourinho has previously echoed these sentiments about Messi, believing that the diminutive Argentine required little to no input from a manager to be impactful.

Fenerbahce would be Mourinho's 10th club as a coach, and he has overseen the careers of some of the greatest players in the last two decades, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, John Terry, Xavi Alonso, e.t.c., all of whom he named in the same video in a different question about the best talent he coached; however, Mourinho never had the privilege of coaching Messi.

Mourinho on the GOAT debate

Despite being a compatriot of Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi's direct rival in the debates for the best player in the sport’s more modern era, and even coaching the 38-year-old at Real Madrid, Mourinho believes the Argentine is the best.

Completing his sentence for the earlier question about the best player he never signed but wishes he did, Mourinho said, “I have to say in our generation, he was the best.”

Mourinho is currently enjoying his holiday but will soon be preparing for a new season with Fenerbahce. As Pulse Sports reported, the Turkish club have their sights set on Super Eagles ace Wilfred Ndidi, and the Leicester City man could be playing under the iconic Jose next term.
