Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga put himself in prime position to write a new chapter of history following his goal in Kenya’s heavy defeat to Cameroon.
Kenyans are still coming to terms with Harambee Stars’ 4-1 loss to Cameroon in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Friday but for captain Michael Olunga, there is some little positive.
Olunga scored the consolation goal as the Indomitable Lions ran riot over Kenya, taking his tally for the national team to 30 from 61 matches.
It means Olunga is five goals away from becoming the joint all-time top scorer for Kenya and six away from being the country’s top marksman.

‘He has everything’ – Former Harambee Stars coach questions Engin Firat’s tactics after Cameroon hammering
The former Harambee Stars coach feels Engin Firat should play a more attacking style of football given the kind of resources he has at his disposal.
In Friday’s encounter, Cameroon went ahead after eight minutes through Vincent Aboubakar’s penalty before Martin Hongla doubled it in the 39th minute but Olunga reduced the arrears two minutes later.
Bryan Mbeumo’s 43rd minute goal, added Christian Bassogog’s in the 55th ensured the big victory for Cameroon to send them top of Group J with seven points.
There has been nothing to celebrate for Kenya but Olunga continues to close in on history as he is still fourth on the all-time top scorers’ list with AFC Leopards legend Elijah Lidonde, who managed 33 goals for Harambee Stars in just 26 matches between 1950 and 1961, now in his sights.

Harambee Stars’ defeat exposes deep-rooted ethnic division among Kenyans
Harambee Stars players are being subjected to ethnic profiling by a section of Kenyans following their loss to Cameroon, a cause for worry given the deep-rooted tribalism in the country.
If he beats that, Dennis Oliech’s tally of 34 goals, scored in 76 games between 2002 and 2015, will be next and he would be left with two goals to become the undisputed scoring king for Kenya.
Former Gor Mahia forward William Ouma is Kenya’s top scorer with 35 goals, managed in 66 games from 1965 and 1977, but at 30 and still the country’s main striker, Olunga has time to beat that tally.
Another thing working in his favour is that he is not in an intense competition with anyone as his rivals are far off on the scorer’s list, leaving him in prime position to write a new chapter of history.
