Carragher's comments come as Chelsea's focus shifts from winning the Premier League to securing Champions League qualification.

What Carragher said

Speaking on The Overlap US, via Metro UK Carragher believes Chelsea's title hopes were always a long shot due to the presence of goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and striker Nicolas Jackson in the starting lineup.

He said, "The project looked like it was on track, results were going well. There was a game where they could have gone top of the league. It looked like it was falling into place and I thought they could make it a three-horse race for the title with Liverpool and Arsenal."

"I never thought they could win the league at any stage because of the goalkeeper and the centre forward, they're not at the level," Carragher said.

Nicholas Jackson has scored four goals and assisted 2 in 4 matches this season.

Sanchez has made more errors leading to goals than any other goalkeeper in the Premier League, while Jackson has only scored one goal since the start of December.

Carragher also expressed concerns about Chelsea's center-backs, stating they are "not at the level" either.

Chelsea's recent drop-off in form has seen them fall 13 points behind leaders Liverpool, and Carragher believes it will be a "disaster" if the Blues fail to secure Champions League qualification.

"If they don't get Champions League football next season, having been there for a couple of years and spent that amount of money, that's a disaster," Carragher said.

Chelsea's FA Cup exit at the hands of Brighton has only added to the pressure, and Carragher believes the club's hierarchy will face tough questions if they fail to deliver a top-four finish.

"You have to remember Chelsea have been a winning machine for about 20 years. They've not gone two or three years without a trophy and the supporters aren't used to it," Carragher said.

Chelsea will look to bounce back from their FA Cup exit when they face Brighton again in the Premier League on Friday night.
