Salah has revealed he is happy to be taking part in the tournament and wants to win it at the third time of asking, having missed out on the crown in 2017 and 2021.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has revealed he wants to win his maiden Africa Cup of Nations title with Egypt after a man of the match display against Newcastle United on Monday night.

Salah scored two goals and provided an assist to help the league leaders get all the three points and is now going to link up with his teammates in time for the AFCON which commences on January 15.

The left-footed winger said it “means alot” to play for Egypt and the feeling he gets donning a Pharaohs shirt is something he could not take “for granted”.

“Of course it means alot to play in the national team, you can ask Carragher (Jamie)," Salah told Sky Sports.

“You can ask anyone that, playing for the national team is a great feeling every time stepping in the national team with the national team jersey is like something I cannot take for granted.”

Salah has revealed he is happy to be taking part in the tournament and wants to win it at the third time of asking, having missed out on the crown in 2017 and 2021 when Egypt reached the finals.

“I am just happy to be there, happy to play the tournament and I want to win it," he added.

“I think everyone is telling me the same but I want to win the competition and I would love to win.”

Meanwhile, Salah has expressed confidence in his teammates, saying they will do well without him for the duration of the AFCON.

“Without me, I am sure the players will win the games," said a bullish Salah.

“We have fantastic players, really good qualities and they just need to keep the pressure away, just play the football and I think anyone can play in my position, anyone can do what I am doing.

“The system is good and everyone just needs to feel free to express themselves.”
