Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has extended his stay with the South African giants.

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has extended his stay with the South African giants.

According to Idiski Times, a South African publication, Mokwena signed the four-year contract extension on Monday; however, the rest of the technical team remains intact save for veteran goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene.

The AFCON 2012 Zambia winning goalkeeper is now the assistant goalkeeping coach to Wendell Robinson, while Steve Komphela and Manqoba Mngqithi remain as first-team head coach and senior coach, respectively.

Mokwena assumed the sole head coach role in October 2022 after Mamelodi Sundowns reversed their earlier decision of having three head coaches simultaneously.

The 36-year-old went on to claim the DSTV Premiership title with seven games to spare; he also was just one-point shy of the overall points tally record as Sundowns claimed a record-breaking 15-game unbeaten run last season.

Masandawana stumbled on the continent, though, losing out to Wydad Casablanca on the away goals rule in the semifinals of the CAF Champions League after a 1-1 draw at Loftus Versfeld in the second leg. Sundowns had won the first leg 2-1 in Casablanca.

Mokwena, who insisted that he would sign a contract extension earlier in the month, will now be expected to lead a charge for a seventh straight league crown and give it another shot at winning a second CAF Champions League title.

Former Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Denis Onyango is also expected to sign a contract extension at the club, with his current deal set to expire.
