The former U-20 coach was lured to Singida Big Stars in August 2022 by former Uganda Cranes assistant coach Matia Lule who currently holds the same position at the Tanzanian club.

Athletes and technical personnel in sports always shy away from the fact that money is a motivating factor but not goalkeeping coach Steven Billy Kiggundu.

The former U-20 coach was lured to Singida Big Stars in August 2022 by former Uganda Cranes assistant coach Matia Lule who currently holds the same position at the Tanzanian club.

Kiggundu who is seven months into the job says he is enjoying every bit of his stay.

"Matia Lule informed of a vacancy and linked me to the club owner, we negotiated, and he (the owner) hired me on my terms," Kiggundu told Pulse Sports.

"Few, if not none, of the head coaches in Uganda, earn the money I am making now, so it's all good," he added.

On 4th February, the International Federation of Football Statistics released the list of Africa's top 10 strongest leagues, ranking the Tanzanian Liigi Kuu Bara as the fifth strongest league in Africa.

Kiggundu says this is because of the money and fans spicing up the Liigi Ku Bara.

"The difference between Uganda and here is that clubs here have money; even the lowest ranked clubs pay well and on time."

"Also, the Tanzanian league has a lot of foreign players; at Singida, we have Brazilians, Argentines, Ghanaians, etc. All these players bring quality to the league, something we lack in Uganda."

Simba and Yanga are the two traditional clubs that divide Tanzania. However, the other clubs based outside Dar-es-Salaam also enjoy a fair share of fan support, something the former URA FC and Vipers goalkeeper says Uganda should copy.

"Ugandan clubs need to sign top foreign players for the league to be competitive. Today in Uganda, you don't have a unique player who can influence fans to fill a stadium; Yanga signed Aucho, a huge name and respected."

"We need to go back to the Bana Zidane, Maurice Sunguti days as we also try to have more regional clubs in the top flight like in Tanzania; otherwise, it will be hard."

Singida Big Stars occupy are fourth on the 16 team log, level on points with third-placed Azam FC and 15 points behind table leaders Young Africans after 23 games.
