FOOTBALL Morocco emerges as heart of African football with major friendly matches lineup

Morocco will host nearly half of 35 African friendly matches highlighting its key role in football and South-South cooperation strategy.

Morocco will play host to nearly half of the 35 friendly matches set to animate the African continent during the March international break.

The kingdom's cities are preparing to welcome twelve high-profile matches across five different locations, including standout fixtures such as Nigeria versus Ghana, Morocco versus Angola, Uganda versus Ghana, and Nigeria versus Mali.

This flurry of football activity comes on the heels of a riveting 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, marking Africa's top football nations' return to action.

The clash between Nigeria and Ghana in Marrakech on March 22nd is particularly anticipated, promising to be one of the most compelling contests of the international window.

Still feeling the sting of their AFCON final loss to Cote d’Ivoire last month, the Super Eagles are eager for redemption against Ghana, hoping to overturn the outcome of last year's World Cup playoff defeat.

With over 30 stadiums that have hosted high-caliber football events, Morocco's readiness to manage such significant sports gatherings is undisputed.

These events underscore Morocco's commitment to South-South cooperation, a strategy aimed at fostering partnership, collective growth, and shared prosperity among African nations, advocated by King Mohammed VI.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has been at the forefront of cementing international relations, establishing more than 45 agreements with African football federations since 2017.

These partnerships have facilitated the organization of friendly matches and supported initiatives for youth and women’s teams, coaching education, VAR training, and aid for medical and technical staff.

Morocco's influence in African football goes beyond hosting matches; it has played a critical role in organizing training sessions for African coaches and referees, thereby elevating the continent's football standards.

Since November 2021, the country has hosted 75 international matches, with more planned for the upcoming FIFA dates.

Looking ahead, Morocco’s efforts to host major tournaments like CHAN 2018, 2019 AFCON Futsal, and the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, alongside the bid to host the 2030 World Cup, reflect its long-term vision for football development.

Moreover, being selected to host the next five editions of the FIFA Women’s U17 World Cup cements its position as a key player on the global football stage.

The packed schedule for March's international break showcases a broad spectrum of matches, including engagements outside Africa and intriguing matchups like Ethiopia versus Lesotho in Addis Ababa, and Andorra versus South Africa in Annaba, Algeria.

Other notable games include Tanzania facing Bulgaria in Azerbaijan, Senegal versus Gabon in Amiens, France, and Algeria taking on Bolivia in Algiers among others.
