The Special One could be returning to Chelsea for a third stint as manager
According to reports in England, Roma manager Jose Mourinho is very interested in a return to Chelsea, with life at Roma proving too frugal in comparison to Chelsea’s more generous approach.
Jose Mourinho the Chelsea legend
Mourinho led Chelsea to stunning success in two spells, winning the Premier League title in his first spell and overseeing the club's rise to prominence, but on both occasions he clashed with the club's heirarchy.
He left the club and went on to win more titles with Inter and Real Madrid before returning to Chelsea for a second stint and winning the Premier League with the Blues again, before falling out with the club's higher-ups once more.
Subsequent moves to Chelsea’s rivals, Manchester United and Tottenham, did not pan out, and Mourinho returned to Italy to find some solace with Roma.
Now with I Giallorosi, Mourinho is once again casting longing looks at Chelsea, who are under new management following Todd Boehly’s takeover from Roman Abrahamovic.
Boehly is the reason Mourinho wants Chelsea but is also the biggest obstacle
Mourinho’s main grouse with Roma is believed to be the club’s inability or unwillingness to properly back him in the transfer market, and this is a problem that the Special One is unlikely to experience as manager of Chelsea.
Boehly has sought to rebuild the club and has invested heavily in the two transfer windows that he has overseen as Chelsea owner, spending in excess of £533 million, while Roma have only spent £7.5 on signings in the 2022/23 season.
The biggest stumbling block to Mourinho’s Stamford Bridge return is Boehly’s unshaken faith in current manager Graham Potter, which is one of the reasons he has spent so much on the team in the first place.
Despite Chelsea struggling for form, it appears that Boehly is ready to allow Potter find his feet with the Blues and will not be hurried into firing a second manager within the space of a year.
