The Hippos will now meet Congo in their second group game at the Suez Canal Stadium, in Ismailia on Thursday, with both sides having collected identical 2-1 victories.

Isma Mugulusi is hoping that momentum from Uganda Hippos’ victory in their group game can propel them over Congo at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations U20 (AFCON).

The Hippos will now meet Congo in their second group game at the Suez Canal Stadium, in Ismailia on Thursday, with both sides having collected identical 2-1 victories.

Mugulusi scored Uganda’s opening goal of the tournament to set the stage for their 2-1 victory over the Central African Republic (CAR) on Sunday.

The two sides are expected to finish in the top two of group B, but an early meeting provides either with an opportunity to take the lead and advantage of the race.

“Congo is a very good side,” Mugulusi said ahead of the game, adding; “But we have a good team as well so I think it’ll be a great game.”

“I anticipate that the game will be easier for us because we know what to expect of them so we’ll prepare well and be ready.”

“We have just as good, if not better, technical players in our team and we know what we’re capable of, we just need to work hard, take the advice from the coach and deliver on the day,” he stated.

The Hippos were impressive in their first game, with head coach Jackson Mayanja going for a more pragmatic approach that surely paid off.

Mayanja named Mugulusi, Travis Mutyaba, Titus Ssematimba, and Rogers Mugisha – who was named man of the match – to support John Paul Dembe in the attack.

The decision despite not paying off as the Hippos were disjointed in the first half, the Hippos were electrifying when they clicked in the second half.

Congo meanwhile did not look specifically impressive against South Sudan despite taking all three points, but they surely carry a threat through the industrious Sousssou Ilendo and Murile Bassinga.
