Football today has so many roles former players can engage in. from being head coach, a performance analyst or a football agent, you name it.
Depending on the experiences picked up, some stay put and perfect the roles while others opt to switch to another task as was the case for Sulaiman ‘Mike’ Mutyaba.
The 31-year-old currently undertaking a CAF C coaching course is one of many prominent ex-players venturing into the coaching role.
He will be doing his internship at the former club KCCA FC alongside former teammate Ibrahim Saddam Juma.
For Mutyaba, it’s an excellent opportunity to pursue a coaching career, especially after an earlier botched experience where he ventured into the football agency business but didn’t break even.
“I am happy that I am pursuing coaching; indeed, I was once a football agent, but I realized it wasn’t my calling,” Mutyaba told Pulse Sports.
“I wasn’t going to benefit in any way, let alone earn from it because it requires a lot of money, so I decided to let go.”
The former TP Mazembe and Al Merrikh winger also stressed that he intends to work closely with Saddam Juma, having known themselves since they were younger.
“As you saw, it’s Saddam and me because I intend to work closely with him since we have known each other since we were younger. We also played at the same teams like Wembley, Express FC, Vipers SC and KCCA FC."
“I am grateful to KCCA FC, who welcomed us and provided a platform; it means we did well when we played here.
“We intend to pass on a lot of knowledge, experience and technical abilities to the younger generation," Mutyaba added.
Regarded as one of the most gifted forwards Uganda has ever produced, Mutyaba famously featured for Congolese giants TP Mazembe and top Sudanese side Al Merrikh at a time when Ugandan players hadn’t started frequenting the foreign leagues.
After attaining his coaching badges, Mutyaba will be capable of taking up a role in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.
FUFA Competitions Rules require assistant coaches in Uganda’s top flight to hold at least a CAF C coaching license.
