Amid high expectations, the duo is tasked with not just improving the club's performance, but also achieving the ultimate goal – promotion to the Ugandan Premier League.
FUFA Big League club Mbale Heroes FC is poised to appoint Asaph Mwebaze as their new head coach, Pulse Sports has learnt.
Mwebaze, who is set to join the club on a one-year contract, will be tasked with the challenge of guiding the club back to the Ugandan Premier League.
The new coaching appointment comes on the heels of the club's recent hiring of Simon 'Dunga' Dungu in July.
Dungu has been involved in pre-season training and will lead the team in a pre-season friendly against Uganda Premier League side BUL FC today evening.
He is expected transition into the role of assistant coach, working alongside Mwebaze on the technical team.
This union of coaches promises to bring an intriguing dynamic to Mbale Heroes' strategy and tactics for the coming season.
Meanwhile, Mwebaze left Bright Stars in July, a year into his three-year contract after replacing Paul Kiwanuka.
Despite his short tenure, his impact was significant. The team notched up nine wins and eight draws under his watch, finishing ninth with 35 points last season.
They even made a deep run in the Stanbic Uganda Cup, falling to the eventual champions, Vipers SC, in the semi-finals.
As for Dungu, his history with Mbale Heroes is layered. He led the team to the quarter-finals of the prestigious Stanbic Uganda Cup in 2022 but left the club under a dark cloud when he failed to guide them to promotion in the FUFA Big League.
He returned to the team with renewed vigour and confidence, having successfully led Kiyinda Boys to promotion in the previous season.
Mwebaze's appointment also comes at a crucial juncture for Mbale Heroes.
The club has faced a tumultuous journey in recent years, being relegated from the Uganda Premier League in 2007 and demoted to the third division in 2022.
However, they clawed their way back to the second division last season, securing a decisive 7-0 aggregate win against Bukedea Central FC in the Eastern Regional League promotional play-off final.
The newly-appointed head coach, Mwebaze, has a rich coaching background, having previously helped Maroons FC to promotion on three occasions in 2007 after 20years, 2010 and 2015.
He has also won three big league titles with the club and groomed players like Pius Obuya, Patrick Kaddu, Muzamir Mutyaba, Rukundo Denis, Martin Mpuuga, Abel Eturude, Hudu Mulikyi and Kigongo Ronald
With such a diverse range of experience, Mwebaze seems poised to bring a fresh tactical perspective to Mbale Heroes.
The stage is now set for an exciting and potentially transformative season for Mbale Heroes.
The union of Mwebaze and Dungu, each with their own distinct coaching styles and histories, provides a compelling narrative for the upcoming season.
