Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has spoken about the sacrifices his parents made while he was growing up in Uruguay
Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo spoke candidly about his upbringing and the difficulties he faced while growing up before eventually making the move to the Catalan giants.
Araujo reveals secrets of his success
Araujo has been with Barcelona since 2018 when he joined the Blaugrana from the Uruguayan side Boston River and started playing for the first time in the 2019/20 season.
The 24-year-old defender survived being sent off on his debut against Sevilla in 2019 to become one of the most important parts of the current Barcelona team, with many believing he is being prepped to be a future Blaugrana captain.
Araujo has played 113 matches for Barcelona in all competitions since his debut in 2019 and has helped the club to one LaLiga title, one Copa del Rey, and one Supercopa de Espana crown.
With all that success, it is easy to lose oneself in the splendour of it all, but Araujo has managed to stay grounded thanks to his humble roots in Uruguay.
Araujo pays homage to his parents
Speaking to the Athletic, Araujo explained the sacrifices that his parents had to make for him to reach this level, starting with his father.
“I only saw my father for four days a month,” Araujo said, before continuing, “He worked in the fields, in forestry, and he would spend 15 days away from home, then he’d come back for Saturday and Sunday, and on Monday he would go again.
“[It was] like that almost all my life.
According to Araujo, his mother was not left out either, and he spoke of her next, saying, “It’s the sacrifice of wanting to make a success of your family.
“My mother also worked cleaning houses. It was a sacrifice they made to give us the best and today it makes me very happy to be able to repay what they did for me a bit.”
Araujo was crowned LaLiga champion for the first time with Barcelona this season after forming part of one of the most solid defences in the league’s history.
