Uganda Cranes goalkeeper, Nafian Alionz, has commenced his professional journey on a triumphant note.

Currently signed with Ethiopian team Mechal FC, also known as Defence Forces SC, the former URA FC shot-stopper was instrumental in securing a 1-0 victory over Sidama Bunna, earning his side the Sidama Gofere Cup in a preseason tournament.

The 27-year-old celebrated not only a win but also his first clean sheet for Mechal FC.

He expressed his gratitude via his official Twitter account, using the Arabic phrase Alhamdulillah, translating to "Thank God."

Alionz made his move to Mechal FC in August 2023, concluding his seven-year allegiance to his boyhood club, URA FC. He initially joined URA FC in 2016 before furthering his education at the university.

He played a pivotal role as the captain for three seasons and represented the Uganda Cranes, showcasing exceptional skills during the 2022 CHAN tournament in Algeria.

Despite Uganda's failure to advance beyond the group stages, Alionz delivered noteworthy individual performances, including a penalty save during open play in the Cranes' 1-0 group-stage victory against Senegal.

Mechal FC, whose last triumph in the Ethiopian Premier League was in 1989, will be looking to Alionz, the former URA FC captain, to lead them towards their first title in 34 years.
