Naija Stars Abroad: Dessers, next Jay Jay Okocha, and unknown Eagle outshine Osimhen, Iwobi others
Naija Stars Abroad rounds up the performances of Nigerians and Super Eagles across the world, with Cyriel Dessers, Ejuke and a little-known Flying Eagles star taking the shine from Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi and others.
Overlooked Super Eagle leads
Handed only his sixth start of the season, the 28-year-old went on to show his manager he deserves more with a goal and assist in a 4-1 thrashing of Volendam on Sunday.
The Super Eagles-ignored star has now scored 11 goals and provided two assists in just six starts for Ajax.
That performance was enough to see him edge other Super Eagles stars led by team of the season star in the Bundesliga, Boniface.
Boniface’s bench role continued as Bayer Leverkusen continued their brilliant run at Frankfurt. But the 23-year-old came off the bench to wrap of the show with a late penalty as Leverkusen won 5-1 to equal a 59-year-old European record.
In that same encounter, Boniface’s compatriot at the club, Nathan Tella, also contributed immensely as he started and won the penalty that led to the third goal for Werkself.
In Italy, it was the Chukwueze show in the Serie A but it was not enough following a six-goal thriller.
Chukwueze was in his element, delivering a creative masterclass that saw him assist of one of the goals as AC Milan and Genoa played out a thrilling 3-3 draw.
Other Naija Stars
In England, Calvin Bassey kept a clean sheet but Alex Iwobi was caged as Fulham recorded a goalless affair against Frank Onyeka’s Brentford.
Taiwo Awoniyi returned to action for Nottingham Forest as they came from behind to thrash already-relegated Sheffield United 3-1 on Saturday.
Earlier on, Elijah Adebayo got the weekend off to a flying start when he netted on his first start since his return from injury for Luton Town on Friday against Everton.
And in the Championship, it was celebration time for Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho as they lifted the title despite signing off from the lower division with a home defeat to Blackburn.
Elsewhere, Paul Onuachu, Cyriel Dessers, and the Super Falcons stars all endured quiet outings as the domestic seasons slowly reach climax.
