Starlets are set to take part in a double-headed encounter against Botswana in the quest to qualify for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has pledged that the government is in “full support” of the Kenya Women’s National Team, Harambee Starlets, as they prepare for the upcoming final round of the 2024 Women Africa Cup of Nations two-legged qualifier against Botswana

Speaking as he paid a courtesy visit to the team’s training session held at the Nyayo Stadium, Namwamba acknowledged the government’s key role in ensuring the success of all its national teams and committed to rallying behind the Harambee Starlets.

“The government has offered its full support to the team. We have also helped facilitate the release of Ulinzi Starlets midfielder Sheryl Angachi from the Kenya Defence Forces recruitment training,” Namwamba said.

“We will be looking forward to them putting on a good game tomorrow as they face Botswana, who are equally as tough and talented as our ladies.”

FKF President Nick Mwendwa, on his part, thanked the government for always being present and offering support to the national teams.

“I must say thank you alot to the CS for committing to support the Harambee Starlets and ensuring there is government support for all our national teams so that they prepare well and bear positive results,” said the FKF president.

Harambee Starlets play Botswana in the first leg on Wednesday, November 29. Afterward, they play Botswana in the second leg away on December 5.

Starlets who have been in camp for the past week host Botswana with a win of a big margin in the back of their minds as the winner of the tie-on aggregate will book a slot in the WAFCON finals scheduled for Morocco.

The Kenyan girls defied odds to eliminate Cameroon in the past round on post-match penalties after a 1-1 draw on aggregate in regular time.

Botswana on the other hand crushed Gabon 10-1 on aggregate to book a date with Starlets.

Home advantage in such assignments are significant and in this regard, the Federation together with the government have waived gate charges for the game set to kick off at 3 pm.

Starlets head coach Beldine Odemba admitted that fans played a crucial role in Kenya’s win over Cameroon at Nyayo Stadium and will hope that her girls will draw extra motivation from the stands on Wednesday.

A scan through social media shows that Kenyans consider Botswana a relatively easier opponent than Cameroon but Starlets ought to approach them with caution.

The Zebras made their first appearance in the WAFCON last year in Morocco where they sailed all the way to the last eight of the tournament.
