Former Nigeria international and recently appointed Super Eagles manager has revealed how he managed to stay injury-free for most of his career

Super Eagles manager Finidi George has provided some much-needed insight into staying fit and avoiding injuries as a professional footballer.

After more than a decade of active football, few would be in a better position to advise youngsters on how to maximise their careers than the recently installed Nigeria national team manager, who was willing to share his secret to a long and fruitful career.

Finidi’s secret to avoiding serious injuries

The newly appointed Super Eagles head coach, in an interview, stated the secret behind his career longevity and penchant for avoiding injuries, saying, “Because of my way of playing [I had] no serious injuries. I let the ball do the work for me and always look for the right moment to move into space.

“I played clever so when you play clever all the time you hardly get into duels where you get a fracture. I was always smart, a very smart player. If you play that way, you hardly have injuries.”

Finidi’s stellar career

Finidi played professionally for 15 years, representing top clubs in Europe, including Ajax in Amsterdam where he won the Eredivisie three times, and the UEFA Champions League in 1995, as well as Real Betis and Real Mallorca in Spain.

The winger also represented Nigeria for 11 years during his professional career, representing the country at two World Cups and four African Cup of Nations, winning the prestigious tournament in 1994.

Fans of the Super Eagles will be hoping that the newly appointed head coach will be able to steer Nigeria to similar success after he was handed the reins of the national team on a permanent basis.
